J5

Don't blame it on the sunshine. Don't blame it on the moonlight. Don't blame it on the good times. Blame it on the boogie.
Oh yeah, words of wisdom from the J5. Ok, so not really. But "Blame it On the Boogie" is a great song. Danceable, disco fun. And when they start singing "I just can't, I just can't, I just can't control my feet," well, I usually can't control mine either.
Alright! The Jackson Five, at their best. (No worries, there will probably be seven or eight more of them "at their best" - they're that good.)

The Supremes

I don't want to hear anything bad about disco around here. Don't tell me that disco is just cheaply commercialized funk. I know that. And I still love it. I don't love it because I think it's beautiful, amazing music. Nor do I love it for the apparently distasteful fashion that it sparked (although that was some groovy fashion). And I don't love disco because of John Travolta (the man could dance).

No, I love disco precisely why everyone else seems to dislike it: disco is just so darn campy. And I don't care how many blunts you smoke to your head without having it affect you, deep down somewhere you still love camp. Everybody does, they're just pretending not to. Hiding behind their curved rim baseball hats, their black turtlenecks or their goth make-up, they're just acting. Little campy camp-lovers just pretending to be what they're not.
And, in true disco style, today's song is campy. Diana Ross and the Supremes. Already campy as is, but this song is just the ultimate disco song. Listen to it alone in your house, pretend to be Diana suffering from her love hangover, and you'll see why.
I'm not gonna get into the musical quality or the emotions this songs stirs in me. Because guess what? It's not about that. It's just about playing disco queen for the afternoon.
