This Blogexplosion thing is funny. It really has exploded. I like the idea though - there's a strange sort of sheepish recognition on everybody's behalf that a) they read a lot of sites and b) they want a lot of people to read theirs. "Blogging" (still hate the word) is something that my friends just don't get, and I only half-get myself, but Blogexplosion is a whole world of people who seem to understand.
The one issue I have with Blogexplosion is the rating idea. Every blog group thingamajig has one, but they annoy me. I sorta feel like the whole point behind blogging is that nothing has to be polished, you can say what you like, and people who find it interesting will hopefully come back. We're not exactly looking to be published novelists. Most bloggers are just geeks with something random to say. I like it that way, and wish there wasn't an imposed sense of how-it-should-be, you dig? The really good writers - who also happen to be bloggers (Dooce, for example)- will get discovered, ratings or none.
Anyway. Hello Blogexplosion types. You're welcome here.
Amen to that! I think you should be able to say if you want your blog rated. I hate popularity contests.
ditto on the ratings. If they have to have them, I'd like to see the rater's website a required field. That way I could go see whether or not I care what this person thinks of me. Both for good rates and bad.
Good point with having an option to decline ratings for your site, but if you're so against it then why be bothered by a negative rating?
I think it's just another gimmick to encourage users to surf blogs. In that light I think it's a good idea.
My blogs rating is a five by the way, so it's not like ratings have benefitted me.
Like your blog.
Hm... I don't think the negative ratings really bother me (although they used to). I just think Andrea's idea is a good one: if I want to know, let me ask for it. No need for imposed rating systems.
I'm ambivalent about the ratings thing--got really demoralized the other day when I saw mine were low, and thought the same as you: hey, I didn't ask to be rated! Then I tried to remember what one of my favorite YA authors says on her blog: "You are not a hundred-dollar bill. Not everyone is going to like you." And for some reason I felt better.
p.s. thanks for the American Girl Doll tips. I'll remember them next time a grandparent wants to buy my kid an expensive present ;)
Amen to that. Since when a person's personal thought have become subject of contest or ratings?? I just dont get it.. and if we talk abotu design. .well that;s personal too. Smething I find hideous might be gorgeous to your eyes.. Well said !!
and I found you through a blog explosion's blog. . .visited elsewhere and saw you there
I feel kinda the same about the rating thing. If I like somebody, I'm lible to give them a 10...if not, I'll just move along. Who am I to judge what is good or bad with somebody's blog?
i'm becoming a little disillusioned with blogexplosion, actually.
it used to be all about discovering new blogs, but now there are so many ratings and disclaimers that it's like "discover new blogs!. . but only ones that you don't find offensive because they've said the word bitch in the past."
Jay - I think your technique is a good one. I've obviously just never really been into ratings.
Marie - Agreed
Although, I guess, overall, it's still a pretty cool idea. Ratings and all.
Hi! Surfed on in through BE and wanted to say hi. I'm really addicted to BE; I think it's a great thing. I read Dooce, too! Nice site you have here. I look at BE as a way of discovering new blogs, not so much gaining traffic or getting credits! I just wanted some new blogs to read. :)
