1) There has been a grave error made on imesh (which is like kazaa but, in my opinion, better).
The legendary, friggin' unreal band Funkadelic has been terribly, horribly inaccurately credited with the production of the following songs:
- Play that Funky Music White Boy (Wild Cherry)
- Kung Fu Fighting (Carl Douglas)
- Word Up (Cameo)
Ok, ok, ok. Very wrong. I know these people on these file-sharing programs get the info wrong all the time. Most of the time I don't care.
But not only is it a crime to NOT know Funkadelic's repertoire by heart, but how can you possibly deny these three one-hit-wonders of their sole claim to fame? They're kick-ass songs. They deserve the credit.
Funk. Don't fuck with it.
2) Am I the only one bothered by the beginning of the video to/song "You Rock My World" (yes, Michael Jackson again) when MJ says "She's good." with a little laugh. It's slimy. And that chick would never give MJ the light of day in a dance club - why he is so confident that he's gonna "get her"? Well, I know, it's cause he's a multi-millionaire, so he can be pretty confident about it. But I find his voice really creepy when he talks about it. Like it's wrong to think about Michael as having any sort of sexual desire whatsoever.
3) Jay-Z made a song using a loop from Tupac's "Me and My Girlfriend." (Side note on that song: I sort of half-listened to it, oh, thirty times thinking that Tupac was being so cute. You know, how cute! A rap song about his girlfriend that he can't stand being seperated from! It was only the thirty-first or thirty-second time that I realized he was talking about his gun. Not anywhere near as cute, really.) Isn't it sort of wrong to take a loop from a song that is under ten years old? You're supposed to sample from the generation before you, are you not? Jay-Z's a dickwad anyway, so I don't see why I should expect great things from the man, but a little RESPECT isn't too much to ask. Really.
Now for a few questions, because I am not in the US:
1) Why is everybody so obsessed with Coldplay? Sounds kinda like Matchbox 20 to me.
2) Why is everybody so obsessed with Norah Jones? Sounds kinda like your typical bird to me.
3) What's the big song of the moment? The one that keeps playing on the speakers in the grocery store? We're behind, so I want to get ahead. Here, it's still "Lose Yourself." Still.
Now, to end on a positive note - something that is done right. A few words of wisdom from Outkast (I'm in an Outkast period. They come and go every four months or so, and this seems to be the appropriate moment to bring them up):
- If the dealer dealt a fucked up hand of cards you've gotta play 'em ("Humble Mumble" from Stankonia)
- Make a business for yourself, boy, set some goals. Make a fair diamond out of dusty coals ("B.O.B -Bombs Over Baghdad" from Stankonia)
- You focus on the past your ass'll be a has what ("Rosa Parks" from Aquemini)
1 - i don't listen to coldplay. i think i've only heard one of their songs.
2 - norah is jazzier than the rest of these bubble gum-ish people (avril, m branch, vanessa c, to name a few) ... so i dig her.
3 - i haven't listened to the radio in ages. my college is in a stinkin' valley. i get no reception, even tho i'm on the 7th floor.
That sucks! I don't get any FM reception for some reason in my house. Just AM. Which is better anyway, but still...
Norah won like, six million grammies, didn't she?
Cameo a one hit wonder?
"She's Strange"....and I like it.
"Aligator Woman" from an early LP
I did hesitate on Cameo. But I think for your average cat, they would only know "Word Up."
Sometimes it's hard for me to gage the general knowledge of such things. But I think Cameo's only mega-hit was "Word Up."
Maybe.
I am no help. I don't listen to the radio, I shop at organic groceries (with no loud speakers), and lately I'm a little obsessed with Sly.
1. I don't do the coldplay thing, so I can't help. Wasn't the singer dating Gwyneth? That would make him more interesting.
2. Norah does have a pretty voice- and she sets a mood, you know? Good music to take a bath to in late autumn. But I don't think she deserved all those awards.
3. I'm hearing a lot of 'nevermind' when I do venture into the normal grocery store, but I think that the checkout boys take over the speakers after 1 a.m., and that's when I usually shop.
Do they have 24 hour groceries in France? Can you do the auto checkout there? I love the auto checkout.
1. Coldplay had two or so wonderful songs on their breakthrough album. The big single (yellow, I think) was NOT one of them and it was obvious they were gonna work on the next album with that sort of hitology in mind. So the second album, though it yielded another pair of wonderful songs, was definitely a marketing spawn. And apparently a successful one.
But I will say that I went to a very intimate show right before they released the second album and it was the best show I've ever been to (sans a few of the given singles). I didn't know the new material and they played it with amazing truth (no, I don't know what that means). The album was way too clinical after hearing it like that. Don't tell the teacher but my friend got a great live recording of said show and I prefer to listen to it vs. the album.
2. Heard one song of hers. Really boring. But they wax: "she WRITES her own STUFF!!" Sad state of affairs when it's assumed otherwise.
3. I have no insight. I live inside a hollowed-out sculpture of Anna-Nicole Smith.
Can I just say that I love all of you that check the site and comment and participate? You make my day, every day. Or almost...
I would like to continue but I have had too much champagne, and that means it's bedtime.
But I. Love. You.
That's not just the champagne talking.
I still must defend Cameo : )
While I grant you that Word Up was their largest hit, they had a career that spanned some 17 years. I saw them four times before Word Up came out. Them and The Gap Band with Dazz.
Now I am going to bed and we all love you Lee!
(The next day...champagne has left the system)
Just for that extra love, Jay, I'll give you Cameo. You win. As I said, hard to gage these things.
Maybe you could do it? Go out on the street and ask people if they can name any songs by Cameo. I dddaaarrrre you.
PS - How many times did you see Cameo in total? Four times is already a shit ton.
Probably six times or so. It still doesn't top the number of times I have seen Springsteen (11) or Earth Wind and Fire (8)
