How many Americans know who the second president of the United States was? Not many. I have asked a few of my young, educated friends. Answers thus far include Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Moore, neither of whom ever held office. So how many Americans reading this DO know? No cheating. And anybody forced by my father to memorize the presidents in order (or anybody who did it of their own strange will) is not allowed to play.

Well what do you know? It's August.
Contemplation Originally uploaded by odessa So... hi. It has been awhile. I am returning to this blog like an out-of-touch friend, happy to see...
Um...Lee? I'm assuming this is based around my phonecall the other night...oh boy, so embaressed! Where you just being nice though when you said 'a few of my...friends,' or can I feel nice and normal by thinking maybe I'm not the only one who didn't know? Or rather, who knew at one point, but forgot such a long time ago, forgot when it was lost in the mass of information tagged US Government? I might have to put a check to these late night phone calls with random trivia questions! Like...who sings that song that goes 's, t, o, something!' Whew, just laughed out loud..sorry, inside joke.
No Kathy, there was another friend in there too. It was your phone call that made me ask the other friend. I also asked Serge, who doesn't really count, and he suggested John Smith. Then corrected himself and suggested Thomas Jefferson, which I was more impressed with than my American friends' two suggestions.
ah-ah! I am impresseed by Serge.
But, I didn't suggest Thomas Jefferson because I knew he was the third president...at least he didn't say Sam Adams! :)
(visiting from the MT forums to see that your comments are popping up nicely now!!)
I think I know the first 6. :) So I do know the 2nd one w/o looking. I won't post it in your comments so others can have the fun though ;)
Kristine - You folks certainly are thorough over there. Thanks for checking! Impressive. Both the thorough work and the knowledge of the first six. Did your dad make you memorize them, too? Just kidding Dad...I didn't memorize them because you made me. I did it out of the competition you sparked between me and the siblings.
Dad: "Who can do all the presidents in under thirty seconds?"
A voice other than my own: "Oh, I can! I can!"
Anyway, yeah...the comments are popping up now. Yay!
As I recall, it was some family car trip that I wasn't on where y'all decided "memorizing the presidents in order will be fun!" I can only do the first six presidents because (1) my junior high school was named after the 4th president and (2) the streets of Chicago sort of go in order. Actually, with the 2nd president out of order. So really, neither of those reasons really explain why I can name the 2nd president, do they?
Okay, I'm going to stop typing now...
Washington Adams Jefferson Madison Monroe Adams Jackson Van Buren Harrison Tyler Polk Taylor Philmore Pierce Buchanan Lincoln Johnson Grant Hayes Garfield Arthur Cleveland Harrison Cleveland McKinley Roosevelt Taft Wilson Harding Coolidge Hoover Roosevelt Truman Eisenhower Kennedy Johnson Nixon Ford Carter Reagan Bush Clinton Bush
If you're going to try and be sneaky and write them down, at least use a name that wouldn't give away that you're from this dorky family. I track you people, too, by the way. There's no funny business going on around here, Romulus.
Who suggested Thomas Moore anyway? As in, Sir Thomas Moore? From the same time period as Oliver Cromwell et al? I didn't even know that Americans knew who he *was*!
Er...I mean, no funny business gets by me. There actually probably is some funny business going on. Weird, Kari, you just posted and I am writing. I don't want to give away who said Thomas Moore. She might be opposed to exposure on a public site. You never know. I protect my readers. And friends.
I was just impressed that someone came up with his name. I only know who Moore is because I was in a play about him.
Theater and Trashy Novels. Basically, those two are my source for all historical novels. Except the occasional History Channel documentary.
and by historical novels, I mean historical information.
Loving your site Lee Ann :) and no I didn't know who the second president of the United States was. My dad made me do plenty of memorizing in my days but I never had to sit down and memorize the presidents.
Well, Cristina, it's a really blast. You really missed out on some good family memorization fun!
Lee,
My pet peeve is the rantings of the religious right in the US talking about how the founding fathers had it right when they came up with the motto for the US. In my estimation, if we would have stuck with the motto that the founding fathers did pick, we wouldn't have some of the problems we have.
Nice web site...Jim
Thanks Jim...nice of you to stop by, and to say your piece. I hope to see you back, it's always good to meet friends of friends!
I'm a sophomore in high school that stumbled on this site, looking for a pneumonic device to memorize the presidents, because I have to know them for my Advanced Placement history class, I don't want to take it, but its worth college credit and is required to take the AP English class I want to take. Anyway, if any of you have a good trick to learning them I'd be very grateful :)
mnemonic*...lol...pneumonic...stupid lack of sleep...

I am a lawyer, and even born on the 4th of July, and I can name them correctly (without devices) only to Lincoln; relatively lost on the middle score, then pick up at Eisenhower through the end, the span of my lifetime!
For Jack Tschudy to get him to Linclon, at least:
Washington's Army Jogged Many Miles And Jogged Very Hard To Philadelphia To Find Pretty British Ladies.
John Adams! I have to memorize all of them for my history class!
no the 2nd president was john adams!!!
